Bodys Isek Kingelez

DR Congo

“Kingelez : Kinshasa une ville repensée (Kingelez: Kinshasa, A city rethought)”

A film by Dirk Dumon, 2003.

The documentary film “Kingelez : Kinshasa une ville repensée” tells the story of the Congolese artist Bodys Isek Kingelez (DRC, 1948–2015). Kingelez made sculptures of imagined buildings and cities that reflected his dreams for his country, his continent, and the world.

Kingelez’s vibrant sculptures were created from a range of everyday materials and found objects—colored paper, commercial packaging, plastic, soda cans, and bottle caps—all meticulously repurposed and arranged. His maquettes offer fantastic, utopian models for a more harmonious society of the future. An optimistic alternative to his own experience of urban life in his home city of Kinshasa.
